Orwell Park

Refurbishment & extension of a Victorian house.

The challenge was to restore the house to its original glory and to transform the low & dark garden level. The owners wanted their kitchen at this level so they could easily enjoy the garden. The solution was to lower the floor level. 1.5 meters below the existing level, a new concrete floor was formed across the full width of the house and extended out into the garden. A clear open plan kitchen was created. Cross beams transfer the load of the return over head and enable a clear column less space. This space opens onto a terrace which then steps back up to the garden. The garden level has been transformed into a tall, bright space. The remainder of the house was refurbished simply.
