Ireland House, Tokyo, Japan
This proposal for the new embassy in Japan is to highlight Ireland’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region and to celebrate Ireland’s partnership with Japan. The building has a strong presence on the street. It is composed in two distinct volumes, one public-facing & welcoming to the front, the other private to the rear. The volumes are wrapped in a woven screen, an adaptable skin which can react to the differing climatic conditions and which speaks to the diverse activities and privacy requirements required by an embassy. The screen lifts at ground level to open the public areas of the building to the city.
